In accordance with the above, the MDMA from the
Indian side and CONSOBIOMED from the Italian side have agreed to set
up a CCCC to provide regular and recognised forum for discussion on
promotion of economic, technical, R&D and educational activities
between businessmen and experts of the two countries.
CONSOBIOMED is a consortium of Medical Device
Companies located in Mirandola town in the Modena district in Italy.
Different multinational and Italian groups with specialisation in
the production of plastic disposable products for haemodialysis,
plasmapheresis, transfusion and infusion therapies, and also in the
production of the machines used for the above mentioned technologies
are located in the biomedical industrial district of Mirandola.
Mr. Luciano Fecondini, President, CONSOBIOMED
visited Mumbai and Ahmedabad in the second week of February to
participate in the conference, "Medical Device Technology:
Concept to Commercialisation" jointly organised by National
Biomedical Engineering Society, Medical Disposable Manufacturers’
Association, Medical Plastics Data Service, The Indo-Italian Chamber
of Commerce and Industry and Popular Plastics and Packaging.
Mr. Fecondini explained the history and growth of
the Italian cluster and the various programmes and activities by
CONSOBIOMED to about 150 delegates from the Indian Medical Devices
Industry participating the conference held at the World Trade
Centre, Mumbai on February 12, 2001.
Later on the same day, the MoU was signed by the
two clusters at World Trade Centre. Mr. CS Patel, President, Medical
Disposable Manufacturers’ Association signed the MoU. Mr. Sathish
Kumar, Director, INDITALIA, Indo-Italian Chamber of Commerce and
Industry, Mumbai, Mr. Tamal Sarkar, National Expert, UNIDO (Cluster
Development Programme), New Delhi and a number of medical devices
industry representatives were present on the occasion.
Mr. Fecondini also visited a number of medical products
manufacturing companies in Ahmedabad and discussed various possibilities for mutual
cooperation between the two clusters. He also visited the leading
national institutions in Ahmedabad like BV Patel Pharmaceutical
Education & Research Development (PERD) Centre and Central
Institute of Plastics Engineering and Technology(CIPET).
The small and medium scale medical disposables
manufacturing units in Gujarat contribute approximately 60% of
country’s production and requirements of medical disposable
products. With the origin of this industry in India about 25 years
back, this industry has grown manyfold.
The Gujarat Government has accorded high priority for upgradation
of technology and modernisation by existing industrial units. The
R&D institutions set up in the State are being strengthened and
encouraged for taking up technology upgradation programme in
specific industrial clusters including medical devices cluster.
Encouragement is given to get
accredition with international quality testing agencies in order to
make them internationally renowned. Innovations from small
enterprises and individuals is encouraged.
UNIDO has identified Ahmedabad (Gujarat) as an important cluster
location for medical devices and pharmaceuticals industry. MDMA is
carrying out common interest activities in the field of manpower
training, quality testing, quality assurance and GMP requirements,
productivity improvements, marketing support, etc. with active
support from UNIDO.
