Facility For Electroretinography In Mumbai (India)

Maharashtra Governor S M Krishna recently inaugurated Mumbai's first multifocal electroretinogram & VEP at Aditya Jyot Eye Hospital in Mumbai.

Electroretinography is an eye test used to detect abnormal function of the retinal (the light detecting portion of the eye). During the test, an electrode is placed on the cornea (at the front of the eye) to measure the electrical responses to light of the cells that sense light in the retina at the back of the eye. The cells of the retina are called the rods and cones.

An ERG, being a mass responses of the eye, is useful in evaluating both inherited (hereditary) and acquired dis-orders of the retina. An ERG can also be useful in determining if retinal surgery might be useful. It gives immense help in deciding the prognosis of a patient.

Decreased electroretinography values may indicate abnormal function of the retina as occurs with conditions such as hereditary vitreoretinal diseases, central retinal artery and vein occlusion, retinal degeneration, uveitis with retinal involvement and opacities of the media, toxic, or drug induced changes, metallic intraocular foreign bodies.
