Becton Dickinson to invest $70m in India

The Indian unit of US-based healthcare major, Becton Dickinson, would invest $ 30 million to hike production at its plant in India, and said it was open to acquiring healthcare companies in the country.

"We will make an investment of $ 30 million for increasing production and making new products at our Haryana plant.", Becton Dickinson India Ltd (BDIL) MD Chandra Dutt Sharma said in an interview.

Sharma, however, declined to give any time-frame for the investment. "This will be in addition to the $ 70 million which we have invested in the plant since 1997", he said.

The fully automated plant located at Bawal (Haryana) manufactures medical devices and diagnostic equipment and is one of the largest medical device plants in Asia, he said. "We have been open to it (acquisition). If anything comes worthwhile, we will consider it. However, the market does not have many things," Sharma said when asked whether Becton Dickinson would consider acquisitions of domestic healthcare companies.
