CERS
Finds Thermometer Brands Inaccurate
LABORATORY tests conducted by Consumer Education
and Research Society (CERS) on 21 brands of thermometers have found 20
brands to be inaccurate According to a CERS press release, except for
the digital thermometer brand Omron, none of the thermometers
conformed to all the parameters they were tested against.
The most important parameter tested was that of
accuracy, since an inaccurate recording of the second important
parameter tested was response time, since a thermometer that takes too
long to record the actual temperature may show an inaccurate reading
as the thermometer may be removed before it has recorded the correct
reading.
Another parameter is related to the mercury flow,
because if the constriction above the bulb in the thermometer does not
work, a greater force than the normal may be needed to bring the
mercury column down before recording the temperature. Or the
mercury column may descend immediately, even before the use reads the
temperature, making the thermometer useless. According to the
CERS report, none of the thermometers tested carried the mark of
verifying authority showing the year of initial verification.
