Unicondylar Arthroplasty : A New Technique of Surgery For Knee Joint

The joint replacement surgery unit (JRSU) at the Civil Hospital, Ahmedabad, India has introduced Unicondylar Arthroplasty – a new technique of surgery – which requires changing of only a part of knee joint for early osteoarthrits knee.

Compared to the total knee replacement (TKR), the new technology is not only less time consuming but also less invasive than conventional TKR.  This technique provides better and faster relief and patient is able to walk on the third postoperative day itself.  The surgery not only prevents further progression of deformity but also eases future revision to total knee.

To get the better results at the JRSU, the anaesthetists, physiotherapy and nursing staff have been specially trained for preoperative and postoperative care of these patients.

Over 2,000 arthroplasty surgeries including 1,200 hips and 800 knees besides many shoulder and elbow replacement surgeries have been done during the last decade.

Health Insurance Services : Third Party Administrators And IRDA

Third Party Administrators (TPAs), which offer health insurance services, have failed to meet the expectations of Insurance Regulatory and Department Authority (IRDA).  Absence of uniformity in rates among hospitals and diagnostic centers, which are largely in the hands of private entrepreneurs, is one of the main reasons being cited by IRDA.  “The TPAs could not meet our expectations largely on account of non-uniformity in the rates among the hospitals,” N Rangachary, chairman, IRDA, told ET.IRDA has also formed an internal committee to decide on the format in which TPAs should submit periodical reports, he said.  IRDA gave licenses to 23 TPAs country-wide.
